Designed in 2018, this unbuilt proposal for a ceramic and sandstone seating, planter, and wayfinding installation was created as part of a broader renewal scheme for the Paignton station area, working alongside Kay Elliott, QSPM, PJA, and Ginkgo Projects for Torbay Council.
Directly inspired by forms drawn from local architectural heritage, the design is a contemporary nod to the British Arts and Crafts tradition, utilising bespoke ceramics and sandstone to create a distinct, textured intervention. It draws on the Victorian tradition of small but symbolically dense and beautifully crafted civic monuments - from ornamental fountains to bandstands, pergolas and benches - that combined tactile ornament with practical public use.
The installation functions both as a visual reference point and a functional rest stop. Strategically positioned, it helps orient the town by providing a clear marker visible from the high street, the station, and the seafront. At its base, the integrated sandstone seating and planters offer a place for repose, allowing passers-by to take a break and enjoy the flowers on the walk between the town centre, the station and the beach.
